ABOUT THE ARTIST

Donegal-born Catherine McGagh has been living in Drogheda, the town which is the gateway to the Boyne Valley, for the past ten years. She has been painting for a decade, mainly using oilds on canvass, and is inspired by the ancient sites and landscape of the Boyne Valley and wider area.

Full Moon and Skerries rocks
The Hag (Cailleach) of Loughcrew

The Hag of Loughcrew. Ancient stories about the 'storied hills' of Sliabh na Caillighe talk of a hag, or a witch, called the 'Cailleach Bhéarra' who dropped big piles of stones on the hill which became the cairns of Loughcrew.

In this painting, the eye seems to see a maiden lying prostrate across some rocks on the shore at Skerries, Co. Dublin, with the full moon illuminating the scene.

Fairy trees

Fairy Trees on Slane Road

In this image, entitled 'Fairy Trees', Catherine McGagh brings to life some old trees on the Slane Road out of Drogheda.

More 'Fairy Trees' near Drogheda. There is a mythical quality to these old trees.

Rocks at Skerries

Another image in which the eye of the artist sees human forms in the rocks near the shore of the sea at Skerries, County Dublin. In this painting, the eye is drawn towards what looks like an adult figure lying face down with an infant in their arm.
