Newgrange winter solstice 2013
Newgrange solstice 2013
The winter solstice sunrise at Newgrange on December 21st 2013 was the most beautiful and spectacular sunrise since that of 2007, and some say it was the best ever. The photos on this page were taken with my HTC One camera phone. I didn't have my camera with me as I was taking part in the Winter Solstice 2013 event at Glebe House. 115 of us walked from Dowth to Newgrange for the sunrise. When we left Dowth, it was overcast and raining and really didn't look promising! But as we neared Newgrange an opening in the clouds was getting bigger and bigger. The sun peeped out from behind the clouds just as it was rising over Red Mountain. It was spectacular. The light was brilliantly bright, and warm. It put everyone in the best of spirits, and made the morning an unforgettable one.

The moment of sunrise at Newgrange. The bank of cloud to the left of the sun had only just cleared away. The resulting sunrise was beautiful.
