There is a triple spiral on the entrance kerb stone, but the one photographed is inside the chamber, on the side wall of the end recess. The triple spiral (also called the triskele or triskelion) is a symbol unique to Newgrange in megalithic art. It has not been found on any other Stone Age monument in Ireland. There are many theories as to what it might mean, but the most likely explanation of the triskeles of Newgrange is that they relate both to the sun (because of the monument's alignment on winter solstice sunrise) and the trio of deities associated with the monument in mythology (Sun god or sky father, moon goddess or earth mother, and divine, magical son). This is my own favourite image from my collection, because I was able to get just the right lighting on the picked-out spirals and used a 50mm lens for maximum detail and sharpness. It features two circular windows and an arched doorway. Various theories have been put forward about its purpose, including that it might have served as an ice house or that it was some sort of masonic structure. However, the much more prosaic consensus among archaeologists is that it is simply "one of the 'follies' beloved of landlords in a more spacious age" (Claire O'Kelly). It was almost certainly made from stone which had fallen off the great cairn of Newgrange and was scattered around the immediate vicinity. Some follies were built merely as status symbols, while others were constructed in order to employ starving peasants during times of famine. However, when it was in the air it attracted the attention of some swallows, who can regularly be seen in the summer months swooping over Newgrange, gorging themselves on the plentiful supply of insects, before they head south to Namibia and South Africa in the autumn. I got really lucky because this one swooped past the drone camera as I clicked the shutter. In the background, you may notice the 'sun dogs' on either side of the sun, caused by the refraction of sunlight by ice and water crystals high in the troposphere. There is now a crack in the lintel stone that you can see in the upper right of this image. Access has been disallowed on safety grounds. The cairn has been closed since October 2018. Meath, is a special monument of the New Stone Age. It was built there, part of a substantial complex of cairns, over five thousand years ago. It is one of just three cairns which has a passage pointing towards the western aspect – almost all the others pointing towards somewhere in the east.

For many years, I wondered why Cairn S pointed northwest, in stubborn opposition to the rest. In the early 1980s, Martin Brennan and his team of observers noticed that Cairn S pointed towards the setting sun at special times of the year – at Bealtaine in early May and Lughnasa in early August. These are two of the old so-called 'cross-quarter days', the halfway points (in days) between the solstices and the equinoxes.

But for years, there was something else that captured my curiosity. I knew that Cairn S pointed generally in the direction of Sligo, and for a long time I wondered whether it might point towards any of the cairns of Carrowkeel. In recent years, I read a statement in a paper by an academic scholar on archaeoastronomy that none of the Sligo cairns was visible from Slieve na Calliagh, so the idea that Cairn S pointed to Carrowkeel seemed irrelevant.

However, I needed to find out for myself whether intervisibility between Loughcrew and the Sligo monuments was even remotely possible. In August of 2022, I brought a pair of giant binoculars to Cairn S. Those 25x100 binoculars would, on a clear evening, offer unprecedented and clear views of the distant horizon. Guess what? After a couple of minutes of searching, I could see a cairn on a distant hilltop, barely visible above intervening hills. It was the lone cairn on the mountain of Kesh Corran, just west of Carrowkeel. Bingo! At least one of the cairns of the Carrowkeel-Kesh Corran complex was indeed visible from Cairn S.

Wondering about what this might mean, I could not help thinking that the builders of Cairn S were pointing back to the lands of their earlier ancestors, to the place from where they had come as they journeyed eastward. The distance between the two cairns is 94km (not far off 60 miles).

Before I knew about the alignment to Kesh Corran, I had made several efforts to capture the setting sun aligned with the passage of Cairn S. As usual, one-off astronomical events in Ireland are often hindered by clouds and weather. On this occasion, cloud covered most of the sky, but there was a clearance near the horizon, so I waited and waited, and eventually the sun dropped below the cloud line and shone into the ancient monument.

Lughnasa sunset at Cairn S, with its passage stones illuminated. Years later, following in his footsteps, I was able to capture photographs of the rising sun in alignment with the passage of Cairn U.

The rising sun at Samhain appears to emerge from the ruins of a cairn on Carrigbrack, viewed from Cairn L at Carnbane West.

The 'Equinox Stone' is situated at the very end of the chamber of Cairn T (The Hag's Cairn) at Slieve na Calliagh, Loughcrew. Twice a year, at the equinoxes, this stone is bathed with the golden light of sunrise, an extraordinary astronomical alignment created by the Neolithic farmers and astronomers over 5,000 years ago which continues to function today.

There is a poignancy to this image. Back in 2018, following fears of possible subsidence within the passage of Cairn T, the monument was locked up and public access has been prohibited since then. I was fortunate to be able to photograph all the megalithic art in the interior of Cairn T's chamber over a period of about 18 years before its closure. This is one of my all-time favourite images from inside the monument, and shows the mosaic of picked-out symbols which include emblems that look like depictions of the sun.

Back in 1980, Martin Brennan and Jack Roberts and their companions discovered, or rediscovered, the equinox alignment. They were amazed at how the sunlight shone directly onto ancient symbols that appeared to depict the sun. I am grateful to them for their discovery, and equally grateful to have spent many equinoxes inside the chamber, witnessing the light.

For this photo, in what is a very small and tight chamber recess, I carefully used remote flashlight to illuminate the symbols. It remains my all-time favourite photo of this stone because of its clarity, and also because I know I am unable to replicate or emulate it today.

The meaning of the symbols is unknown. The monument builders left no explanation, so we are left to ponder the great mystery of it all. I hope you like this image as much as I do.
