On 22nd February 2023 at twilight, we enjoyed a rare spectacle in the skies over Brú na Bóinne. The bright planets Venus and Jupiter were joined by a slender first crescent moon (only 8.5% illuminated). These three are the brightest objects in the night sky after the sun, and make a spectacular triple conjunction.
The clouds parted beautifully, and some of them remained to help complete this wonderful scene as the moon and planets shone brilliantly over the ancient monument of Síd in Broga (Newgrange). The rest of the face of the moon was illuminated by "earthshine".
Conjunctions of Venus and Jupiter are not considered rare, but they are extremely beautiful events to behold. In a week from now, on 1st March, Venus and Jupiter will be at their closest – at approximately a single moon-width apart. Keep an eye out for this wonderful pairing!
