The megalithic passage-tomb of Dowth is often referred to as the third of the trio of great mounds at Brú na Bóinne in the Boyne Valley. However, it may have been the first of the three to have been built, and it is the only one of the great mega-mounds that is not included on the official tour. It has not been excavated in modern times, but sadly it was badly damaged during what can only be described as a treasure-hunt excavation in 1847 and 1848, which left a huge scar in the monument in the form of a large crater dug into its summit.

This aerial view of Dowth was taken with my drone. You can see the remnants of some probable 'lazy beds' (potato ridges) from the 19th century in the field to the east of the monument. Dowth today is partly covered with gorse bushes (also known as furze or whins).

The image on the website is low resolution with a watermark. The prints are very high resolution, accurately coloured, with no watermark. Each one is signed and numbered on the rear.

  • Unique

I am one of Ireland's best-known ancient monuments photographers. I have an eye for evocative imagery that reminds the viewer of the timelessness of the mythical Irish landscape.
