Sunset in Glendalough

Glendalough is an early medieval monastic city nestled among the hills of Wicklow, and is by far one of the most beautiful sacred sites in Ireland due to the outstanding natural beauty of the surrounding area. It was said to have been founded by Saint Kevin in the 6th century.

There are a number of interesting ecclesiastical buildings and monuments at Glendalough. Among them are the round tower, and St. Kevin's Church, the latter probably dating from the 12th century.

As a photographer of Ireland's ancient monuments and sacred sites, I know that in order to capture truly memorable images, one must be present at those sites when the light is doing special things. In this case, the sun was dropping low in the west in the late evening, and although there had been a lot of cloud, as you can see the clouds began to break up, allowing the sun to shine through.

Using a wide-angle lens, I stood back from St. Kevin's Church and captured this view of the church and the round tower, with the sun almost behind the curious little miniature round tower which peeps out from the roof of the church. It is my all-time favourite image from Glendalough, which I have visited on many occasions over the years.
