ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

High on Slieve na Calliagh in County Meath stands one of Ireland’s most extraordinary ancient ceremonial landscapes. Loughcrew is a place of passage tombs, megalithic art, changing light, sweeping horizons and enduring stories – a landscape traditionally associated with the Cailleach, the great ancestral figure who is said to have formed the cairns by carrying stones in her apron.

Join Mythical Ireland founder Anthony Murphy and experienced local guide Malachy Hand for a special guided exploration of this remarkable place.

During the tour, Anthony and Malachy will consider Loughcrew from two complementary perspectives. Anthony will explore the archaeology, mythology, ancient monuments and astronomical traditions of the hills, while Malachy will share his extensive local knowledge of the landscape, placenames and stories of the area.

Together, they will reveal Loughcrew as much more than an isolated collection of ancient tombs. It is a connected landscape of monuments, traditions, horizons and memories – a place where archaeology and mythology remain closely intertwined.

ANTHONY MURPHY

Anthony Murphy is an author, photographer, researcher and the founder of Mythical Ireland. He has spent more than two decades exploring and communicating Ireland’s ancient monuments, mythology and astronomical traditions through books, films, lectures, courses and guided experiences.

MALACHY HAND

Malachy Hand is a local man who has been guiding visitors at Loughcrew for many years. He possesses a wealth of knowledge about the monuments, the surrounding countryside, local placenames and the traditional stories connected with the area.

MEETING POINT

Slieve na Calliagh/Loughcrew Cairns car park.

The experience begins with the walk from the car park to the summit of Slieve na Calliagh.

DURATION

Approximately two hours.

This includes the walk up the hill, time spent exploring the monuments and surrounding landscape, and the return walk to the car park.

Ages 12–16: €10

Places are limited to 50 participants. Advance booking is required.

IMPORTANT PRACTICAL INFORMATION

The route involves a sustained uphill walk over steep, uneven and sometimes slippery ground. A reasonable level of mobility and fitness is required.

Please wear sturdy, comfortable walking footwear and bring warm, waterproof outdoor clothing. Conditions on the exposed summit can be considerably cooler and windier than at the car park, even when the weather appears pleasant below.

Please bring drinking water and any other personal necessities you may require. There are no facilities on the summit.

This is an outdoor experience in an ancient and sensitive archaeological landscape. Participants are asked to follow the guides’ instructions and to treat the monuments and surrounding environment with care and respect.
