After sharing this photo of the Uisneach Bealtaine Fire Festival fire on social media, quite a few of you pointed out that this photo appears to show a face in the flames.
I did not notice this when downloading the file from my camera, or when resizing it and putting the Mythical Ireland watermark on it before upload. I have since looked through several dozen other photographs I took of the Uisneach fire and can find nothing similar to this.
Through a quirk of happenstance, I captured this image at 1/50th of a second on my Nikon camera and the flames at that fraction of a second looked like a distinctive face (or half-face!) with an eye, a nose and a mouth. Is this just pareidolia, where humans tend to make familiar shapes from random patterns? Or is it something else? I find it fascinating, but my own view is that people will make of it what they want to make of it. I'm just glad to have been there, at Uisneach, among such a wonderful crowd of people, enjoying a modern celebration of a very ancient event.
