A frosty Millmount at dawn from the air
A frosty Millmount at dawn from the air
An aerial view of the great mound and martello tower of Millmount, Drogheda, captured at dawn. The temperature was minus 3 Celcius and a significant frost had built up during what was a cold week. The fog had slowly lifted, but there was still a mist in the air. I hope you like this very atmospheric shot of one of Drogheda's great landmarks.
The martello tower of Millmount sits on a great mound, mentioned in the annals as being one containing a 'cave' that was raided by the Vikings in the 9th century along with caves at Cnogba (Knowth), Dubad (Dowth) and the unknown Achadh Aldai. It is believed that the mound beneath Millmount is probably a prehistoric burial mound, and in recent years archaeologists have been using non-invasive techniques to 'look' into the mound. Local folklore suggests it is the burial place of the Milesian bard Amergin, and also the tomb of the wife of the Gobán Saor, a medieval survival of an ancient Tuatha Dé Danann deity called Gobán or Goibniú.

Unique
I am one of Ireland's best-known ancient monuments photographers. I have an eye for evocative imagery that reminds the viewer of the timelessness of the mythical Irish landscape.
