A view of Fourknocks
A view of Fourknocks
Fourknocks is a small but extraordinary passage-tomb monument of the Neolithic located in southeastern Co. Meath, near the modern-day border between Meath and Dublin. The mound is less than 20 metres in diameter, meaning it is less than a quarter of the diameter of the great Neolithic cairn of Newgrange, which lies less than ten miles away. However, the interior of Fourknocks contains a large chamber which has almost three times the floor area of Newgrange. Using a fisheye lens, it is just possible to capture a view of Fourknocks from close quarters showing the entire extent of the mound.
Visitors to Fourknocks can obtain the key from a nearby house (for a returnable deposit of €20) and enter the monument to explore its wonderful megalithic art. It was excavated in 1950 by archaeologist P.J. Hartnett.

Unique
I am one of Ireland's best-known ancient monuments photographers. I have an eye for evocative imagery that reminds the viewer of the timelessness of the mythical Irish landscape.
