Ballykeel – Stone and Sun

Sunlight breaks into a brilliant starburst above Ballykeel Dolmen in County Armagh, illuminating the weathered stones and the enormous capstone poised above them.

I photographed this scene during my visit on 11th September 2026. From this low viewpoint, the monument has a commanding presence. Lichen traces patterns across the stone, while the contrast between sunlight and shadow draws the eye towards the dark space beneath the capstone.

For me, this photograph captures something of the wonder of encountering Ireland’s ancient monuments – their physical scale, their enduring presence, and the questions they continue to ask of us.
