Beneath the Storm – Creevykeel Court Tomb

Dark rain clouds gather above the mountains of north County Sligo as Creevykeel Court Tomb rests in the green landscape below.

I captured this aerial photograph during a visit to Creevykeel in September 2026. From this elevated viewpoint, the remarkable architecture of the monument can be clearly seen – its great trapezoidal cairn, oval court and stone-built burial gallery set against the dramatic mountain landscape.

Creevykeel is regarded as one of Ireland’s finest and most complete court tombs. Constructed during the Neolithic period by Ireland’s first farming communities, it may be more than 5,000 years old. Its open court provided a place where people could gather, while the chambers beyond were associated with burial, remembrance and the ancestors.

In this photograph, the pale stones of the ancient monument stand out beneath an immense storm-filled sky. The passing rain and darkened mountains evoke the depth of time surrounding Creevykeel – a structure created in the distant past, yet still powerfully present within the living Irish landscape.
