Boyne Valley Mary McAleese Bridge in fog 1

An aerial image of the Boyne Cable Bridge which carries the M1 motorway across the Boyne river west of Drogheda, on a foggy morning at sunrise. The morning mist and fog tends to form close to the river, and this provides opportunities for some gorgeous photography. In this image, it is as if the river itself has become a floating stream of fog, running beneath the great span of the bridge.

The bridge was opened to traffic in 2003, and carried that section of the M1 known as the Drogheda bypass, completing the motorway between Dublin and the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland between Dundalk and Newry.

The bridge passes over Yellow Island, a special area of conservation. Beneath the span of the structure, several important species of birds and creatures live among the woods of Yellow Island.
