Cairn K, Carrowkeel
Cairn K, Carrowkeel
The exterior of Cairn K, one of the cairns of the Carrowkeel complex on the Bricklieve Mountains, County Sligo, Ireland. The cairns are situated on the limestone hilltops of Bricklieve, and on a clear day there are breathtaking views across the ancient landscapes of counties Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim. Cairn K is a Neolithic passage-tomb dating to around five and a half thousand years ago. The early farmers of Ireland built them here in the remote past as places to bury and honour their dead. It is an extraordinary testament to their labours that those cairns still stand today.
Cairn K was excavated along with seven others in 1911 by RAS Macalister, Robert Lloyd Praeger and E.C.R. Armstrong. Close to the tombs, they found evidence of a substantial settlement, indicating that the people who built the tombs actually lived on the mountains. Foundations and remnants of some fifty stone huts are situated at Bricklieve.
Cairn K can be entered, although those of you with claustrophobia might find it a less than pleasant experience! This photo was taken on an autumn morning when mist and fog rolled over the hilltops, creating quite an atmosphere.

Unique
I am one of Ireland's best-known ancient monuments photographers. I have an eye for evocative imagery that reminds the viewer of the timelessness of the mythical Irish landscape.
