Detail from one of the passage orthostats at Cairn T, Loughcrew. Sadly, this photograph is not possible today because Cairn T is inaccessible, having been locked up in October 2018 due to concerns about possible subsidence and collapse. I am fortunate to have been inside Cairn T over a period of many years, capturing views of its interior that are no longer possible to obtain.

Nobody knows for certain the meaning of the symbols of Irish megalithic art, but many of them appear to relate to astronomical concerns. It seems that the builders of the Loughcrew cairns were adept astronomers, watching the movements of the sun, moon and stars.

On the mornings of the equinoxes, in spring and autumn, the light of the rising sun shines into Cairn T and lights up a panel of picked-out symbols on a stone in the furthest reaches of the chamber. That stone contains what look like symbols depicting the sun. I am in awe of the ancient astronomers of Ireland.

Printed on high quality photographic paper that is fade resistant. The watermark (logo) shown is not on the final print.
