Finally, after weeks of waiting, the skies were almost perfectly clear over Síd in Broga (Newgrange) on 14th October 2024 to witness and photograph the comet A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas. It had been visible for weeks to southern hemisphere observers, and after its perihelion (closest approach to the sun) it became an evening object for us here in the northern hemisphere.
The comet looked beautiful in the twilight over Newgrange. I was able to observe and photograph it for about an hour before it set, and before the light of the waning gibbous moon washed out the tail too much. I estimate the tail to be somewhere above five degrees long, and perhaps 10 or more, and there was some hint of a short anti-tail, pointing towards the sun.
I am glad to have finally been able to capture some photographs of Comet A3, since I have been seeing lovely images of it from around the world for several weeks now.
