A brief but spectacular display of aurora borealis (northern lights) was visible over the Boyne Valley on 12th August 2024. Myself and Finn went to Dowth, where we found ourselves alone under a brilliantly clear sky. We captured a number of images of the most intense northern lights, which lasted about 10 to 15 minutes, before the aurora faded and clouds drifted over the scene. In the first two images, Finn pressed the shutter release while I illuminated the monument with my LED light.
Dowth is a giant Neolithic passage-tomb in the Brú na Bóinne complex in the Boyne Valley, and is probably around 5,300 years old. Its sister monuments, Knowth and Newgrange, were excavated in the 20th century. Dowth remains largely unexcavated, but there was a treasure-hunting dig there in the 1840s which caused some damage to the ancient cairn. Although somewhat lonely and forlorn, it is a beautiful place from which to view the night sky, as the ancient monument builders of the Stone Age undoubtedly did thousands of years ago.
