Spring Sunset at Fourknocks
Spring Sunset at Fourknocks
Fourknocks is a most extraordinary monument. It is a Neolithic passage-tomb, dating to around 5,000 years ago. It is quite small, especially in comparison to the great monuments of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, but despite its apparent smallness, it boasts the largest chamber floor area of any excavated Irish passage-tomb.
One of the challenges of getting a good photo of Fourknocks is the fact that the monument is enclosed within a fence that runs around the mound, meaning a photographer is unable to get far enough away from the monument to get a good picture of it.
Challenge accepted! For this image, I used my 14mm fisheye lens, to get the widest angle possible, and leaned back against the fence. As you can see, I was unable to get the whole mound into the photo, but the sun was perfectly positioned as it neared the time of sunset. I love the mood of the photo, and I hope that it captures something of the mystique and beauty of what is beyond doubt one of Ireland's great ancient treasures.
