Mythical Ireland Monograph No.3: Fourknocks: archaeology, astronomy and mythology
Explore the 5,000-year-old megalithic passage-tomb of Fourknocks, Co. Meath, in this monograph by Anthony Murphy, photographer, historian and writer.
Fourknocks is a small passage-tomb situated less than 15km (10 miles) from the giant megalithic monuments of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. Excavated in 1950 by Patrick J. Hartnett, and open to the public, Fourknocks is an extraordinary and beautiful monument. It likely dates to the time when Newgrange was built, just over 5,000 years ago. There is lots of megalithic art picked and incised onto the stones inside Fourknocks, some of it immaculately preserved.
Apart from the 1957 paper about the excavations published by archaeologist P.J. Hartnett, there is no book about Fourknocks. The monument has been mentioned in many archaeological volumes and papers, but it really deserves its own book.
Anthony Murphy, author of Island of the Setting Sun: In Search of Ireland's Ancient Astronomers, Mythical Ireland: New Light on the Ancient Past and seven other books, is delighted to announce the third volume in the Mythical Ireland Monograph series – Fourknocks: archaeology, astronomy and mythology. This will be the first book exclusively about Fourknocks published since the excavations.
